What to Expect
- Riders compete in teams of two to ensure they take care of each other on each leg of the stage race which vary between 80 and 120 km per day. Riding in twos is also integral to team tactics. To qualify for a finish, paired teams have to stay together for the duration of the race and must cross the line within two minutes of each other.
- Times taken to finish each stage of the race are aggregated to determine the overall winning team in each category at the end of the race. Winners of each stage are recognized at the end of each day.
- The five day stage race will be proceeded by a prologue, starting and finishing at Naro Moru River Lodge from 2.30 pm. This will give participants an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the race format and terrain and also acclimatize to the higher altitudes.
- The actual stage race begins with Day 1, 9.00 am, starting and completing at Naro Moru River Lodge.


How To Register
- Participants are invited to register for the full four days of the MTB tour or alternatively can register for a 02-day package or for daily participation. Those wishing to take part in any leg of the event can register within one hour of the start of the day’s stage at the start point. They will be charged a daily fee of 2,000/- per rider .
- For international participants, we have developed various packages which include several Safari options that provide cyclists an opportunity to experience some of what Kenya is traditionally known for as a tourist destination.
What To Bring
Entry into the main event is includes:
- Race participation fees for the prologue and the four stages of the Mt Kenya MTB tour.
- Food, drinks and accommodation for the duration of the tour from Friday in the evening until lunch time on Tuesday. ( Dinner and lunch included on the respective dates).
- Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplementary drinks, energy snacks and water bottle.
- Participants will also be expected to bring their own sleeping bags, clothing, torches and personal effects, which will be transported to/from each stage camp.
- The weather around Mt Kenya changes significantly on a daily basis, ranging from very cool nights and mornings to hot day time temperatures and rain in the mid-late afternoon. It is advised that cyclist are prepared with a day pack with suitable clothing accordingly.
- Although the route will be well marked, you can bring your own navigational devices to track your route and distances daily. Those wishing to capture some of the stunning scenery can also bring a simple camera.
- Security for the group and at the campsite will be provided, but you are encouraged to take personal care of your valuables. Please contact the organizers should you have any specific concerns in this regard.
- There will be a medic accompanying the tour throughout the race, however, it is required that all participants have their own medical cover/insurance, details of which may be requested by the organizers before the start of the race. You will be require to sign an indemnity prior to the start of the race.

Riders and Team Categories
The Mt. Kenya MTB Series events are sanctioned by Africa Extreme and relevant county governments. Minimum age of participation is 19 years on 31 December of the year in which the race takes place. Age of participants must be justified in registration forms according to participation categories and the necessary identification documents provided. All minors must be authorised by parents or guardians. Riders must be in good health and well trained. Teams will compete in men, women or mixed categories. The men and women teams are subdivided in: open, sub-vet, vet and master categories. Categories are determined by the age of the younger of the two riders in the team:
Categories
The younger participants must be between the age of 19 and 29 years on 31 December of the year in which the race takes place
The younger participants must be between the age of 30 and 39 years on 31 December of the year in which the race takes place
The younger participants must be between the age of 40 and 49 years on 31 December of the year in which the race takes place
The younger participants must be 50 on 31 December of the year in which the race takes place.
Pre-events: 4,000/- per team of two; 1,500 kids (8-16yrs)
Main Event:
- Main event : Cost: 40,000/- per person, 80,000/- per team, 100,000/- corporate
- Early bird registration for these is by (dates TBC).
Race Information
The Mt. Kenya MTB series mountain biking challenge is a 2-person team mountain bike stage race and team members have to race together for the entire distance of the race, looking after each other and their equipment. Event Details

The two-day stage race will be preceded by a prologue {TBC} starting and finishing at Naro Moru River Lodge from 2.30 pm. Entry into the prologue is possible as a stand-alone entry. The actual stage race begins with
Day 1
on {TBC} starting at Naro Moru River Lodge. Registration for the day will begin at 7.30 am; briefing will take place at 8.45 am and the race will be flagged off at 9.00 am.
Day 3
on {TBC} will also start at Naro Moru River Lodge; registration for the day will begin at 7.30 am; briefing will take place at 8.45 am and race will be flagged off at 9.00 am. This will mark the completion of the tour and the prize giving will be at 2.00 pm at Naro Moru River Lodge.
Day 2
on {TBC} will also start at Naro Moru River Lodge; registration for the day will begin at 7.30 am; briefing will take place at 8.45 am and race will be flagged off at 9.00 am. This will be the last day for 02 day option.
Please Take Note
- There will be manned checkpoints at between 20-30 km intervals along the route where snacks and hydration will be available.

The event begins with a prologue that will be centred around the Naro Moru River Lodge from 2.30 pm on {TBC}. This will provide riders with a chance to acclimatize and understand the terrain.
Day 1
The official start of the main event will see the teams proceed from the Lodge in an easterly direction heading towards the main Mt Kenya National Park Gate and then proceeding along the forest line towards Kiganjo before returning back to Naro Moru River Lodge for an overnight stay.
Day 3
on {TBC} will also start at Naro Moru River Lodge; registration for the day will begin at 7.30 am; briefing will take place at 8.45 am and race will be flagged off at 9.00 am. This will mark the completion of the tour and the prize giving will be at 2.00 pm at Naro Moru River Lodge.
Day 2
After a comfortable nights rest, teams will head out from the Lodge in a westerly direction this time heading towards the lower slopes of the Aberdares. The route will take riders through some of the high-altitude farms and ranches providing a pleasant change of terrain in contrast to the forested slopes of Mt Kenya. Riders will eventually head back to the Lodge for another overnight stay. This will mark the end of the two-day package, a brief prize-giving ceremony will take place at the Lodge to recognize the winners of the two-day event.
Participants must complete the full designated route and distance of all stages. Only participants who complete all 3 stages will be considered Mt. Kenya MTB series finishers.
Start
- The batch pounds open early and the stage start times will be announced at the race briefing and supplied in the race guide.
- Differential start zones will be allocated according to the overall ranking in the race.
- The top 3 teams in each category will have the option to start from the first row, if present at the start line in time.
- The seeded starting batches will close strictly 10 minutes before the stage starts. Participants must enter the start zone as a team with their bikes, and once entered must remain in the start zone with their bikes.
- Any participant and/or teams who are not in their start zones 10 minutes before the start may be required to start in a later starting batch.
- Participants starting in an incorrect starting group will incur a 30-minute penalty.
Finish
- The finish line closes at 17h00 daily, except for the last stage which closes at 15h00.
- Teams which are deemed by the Race Organisers to arrive at the finish line after the cut-off time will be swept off the route by the sweep vehicle. These teams may continue riding the race, but will not qualify as stage or race finishers.
- Stage winners and overall category leaders must be present at the daily awards ceremony, including the final ceremony.
Traffic Regulations
The Mt. Kenya MTB series will not have exclusive use of any public roads during the race. All regular traffic regulations must be observed at all times during the race.
