Kenya is best known for its world famous safaris, sun, sand and beaches. However, the recent drop in tourism has seen hoteliers going back to the drawing board to revise and revamp their strategy by focusing on new and exciting products.
On the slopes of Africa’s second highest mountain, Mount Kenya, sits a perfect and serene base for climbing the mountain and a unique vacation establishment, Naro Moru River Lodge.
South of the equator and in the heart of Nyeri county, the lodge caters for every class and category of tourists and comprises accommodation facilities such as a camping site, rustic cabin rooms, cottages and country homes that all reflect nature.
The lodge, which stands above a gorge through which flows the Naro Moru River, is located 150km northeast of Nairobi. It provides a serene environment for anyone looking for a quiet yet adventurous holiday.
The lodge is the only one in Kenya that organises trips up Mt Kenya up to point Lenana and having the shortest climbing route to the mountain.
Sir Rufus Klarwill, founder of the establishment and a passionate mountaineer, in one of his interesting quests started the current Naro Moru Mt Kenya trekking route, which is the fastest and most popular route for its three-day programme.
The lodge prides itself for being home to pristine wilderness, unique mountain peaks of great beauty, forest and high altitude plains and are taking advantage of their distinctive features and venturing into sport and adventure tourism.
The mornings, you are awakened by the relaxing sound of the birds singing and the nights you are soothed to sleep by the tranquil sound of the river.
The activities at the lodge include scenic bird watching and nature trails and game drives and excursions. For the lovers of outdoor, there is swimming pool, squash and tennis court.
The hotel consists of two restaurants and two bars, which offers variety of continental dishes and drinks.
With the Kenyan tourism industry starting to recognise sports tourism, with the experience of travel to engage in or view sport-related activities becoming an imperative feature of the industry, the lodge’s management is currently working on an exciting project with David Kinjah — mentor of Chris Froome, the first Kenyan-born and African-born cyclist to win the most prestigious bike racing event in the world Tour de France — and Douglas Wakiihuri, a Japanese-trained runner who won Kenya’s first ever World Championships gold medal in the Marathon in Rome 1987. Wakiihuri is also the head coach of First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.
The project involves creating an international standard biking and running circuit that will cater to those looking for a one-of-a-kind biking and running circuit as a fun or a sports activity to keep fit.
The lodge is also organising an event dubbed Mt Kenya epic to be held in November. The six-day event will attract East African, regional and international bikers and runners who will have the opportunity to traverse counties within Mt Kenya region with the start and finish point being the lodge.
The bikers and runners will experience something that is very unique as they navigate the counties such as tea farms, coffee farms, forests, animals and the local people. When choosing a wide ranging lodging experience, looking at sleeping under the stars or cuddle up in a country cabin room by the fireplace, or spend the night in a homely self-service cottage or country home, Naro Moru River Lodge is the place for you.
