NYERI AND NYANYUKI CYCLISTS PUT ON AN IMPRESSIVE SHOW AT THE MT. KENYA EPIK : NARO MORU TIME TRIAL – 26TH AUGUST 2017
Background:
The fourth edition of the Mt Kenya Epik MTB Tour will take place from 28th to 31st October, 2017.
The Mt. Kenya Epik was created in 2014 by Africa Extreme, a company comprised of two of the very best Kenyan athletes; long distance runner Douglas Wakiihuri and cyclist David Kinjah along with Michael Wamithi, a well known conservation professional, and Julie Wahome of Extreme Outdoors Africa.
Each year’s route takes the riders through some of the most scenic global landscapes and challenging terrain guaranteed to push them to their absolute limits. The event draws some of the country’s best riders taking them on grueling routes through the six counties bordering the mountain – Nyeri, Laikipia, Meru, Tharaka Nithi , Embu and Kirinyaga. The second training pre-event of the Mt Kenya Epik series the Naro Moru Trail Trial took place on Saturday 26th August in Naro Moru. This event was open for riders of any standard. The event attracted over over 36 cyclists from the Nairobi, Nyeri and Nanyuki and 26 youth and kids who took part in the fun category.
The Naro Moru Trail Trial covered approximately 50km on trails within the Naro Moru River Lodge grounds and on surrounding rural roads and offered an opportunity for the riders to enjoy the magnificent Naro Moru countryside. Two person teams began at a mass start riding against the clock for awards in various gender, age, and ability divisions. Race categories included: Mens Elite, Mens Junior, Ladies and Mixed.

The mens open category was won by the two man team of veterans Alexander Sio and Fred Yongo. The duo clocked 2 hours and 24minutes followed by closely by Jessi Wachira and James Wachira representing a team of riders from Nyanyuki who completed the route in a time of 2 hours 34minutes. David Kinyua and Joseph Kimani came in third in a time of 2 hours 41 minutes, just 6 minutes behind the Wachira duo.
In the Junior category, Dickson Luchezia and James Karanja of Safari Simbaz led the pack putting in an impressive win in a time of 2 hours 36 seconds. Brian Kipkemboi and Walter Muriuki sealed the second position in a time of 2 hours and 53 seconds, while third place went to an upcoming team from Nyeri of Chrispin Waweru and Edward Kariuki finishing in a time of 3 hours, 21 minutes.
Ladies category was swept by the Isabella Wanjiru and Asmin Kabiro in just 3hours and 33minutes
The next event of the Mt Kenya Epik Series; the Githunguri Challenge will be held in Githunguri on the 30th of September, 2017
