The main Mt Kenya MTB Tour for 2017 that was scheduled to take place from 24th to 27th of November was postponed as a result of uncertainty arising out of prevailing political situation and accompanying challenges. This in particular affected the participation of international participants in the event. A new date has been set for 20th to 23rd of April 2018. Along with the main event; we will hold a kids event on Saturday 21st of April which will take place at Naro Moru River Lodge.
Mark your calendars, save the date and start preparing to take part; the event is open to riders of all ability. There will be three options open for participation in the main event; four day, two days or daily entry; more details will be available on the Mt. Kenya Epik website on www.mtkenyaepik.co.ke
What is the Mt Kenya Epik Series all about?
A unique event by all standards:
What differentiates the Mt Kenya Epik Series is that it is more than just a series of mountain bike races. What sets it apart are the objectives the Mt Kenya Epik seeks to achieve all of which are related to the events but unique in their execution and their desired impact on various stakeholders of the event including the communities and environment in which they operate and especially Mt Kenya and its surrounding area.
Cyclists:
For cyclists; whether it’s a personal challenge or if the participants take part to win, these events present an opportunity to meet new people, be exposed to some of the most amazing scenery and also experience an exhilarating physical challenge. It is both a physically and emotionally enriching life encounter.
Youth Development:
An integral part of the Mount Kenya Epik is supporting Kenya’s Vision 2030 social pillar that seeks to improve livelihoods for the youth and make them globally competitive and to capitalize on the nation’s international reputation as an “athletic superpower” by opening up the country for top global sports events, encouraged by corporate sponsorships.
Part of this includes the development of youth identified from the region around Mt Kenya in the competitive sporting discipline of cycling. In line with this objective, Africa Extreme, the organisers of the Mt Kenya Epik formed a partnership with the Safari Simbaz Trust in 2016 aimed at creating “champions both on and off the bike.” Together they have established programmes aimed at developing cycling at the grassroots level in the counties through which the Mt. Kenya Epik traverses which include working with local cycling clubs within these communities to:-
- Carry out various skill development workshops
- Assist in structuring local level competitions
- Facilitate access to equipment for development of the sport
- Create awareness about the opportunities/benefits available through cycling and the related businesses.
